Picton Road safety improvements

Reviewed

Project overview

Picton Road is a 37 kilometre transport corridor linking the Illawarra Region with Sydney, the South West and Greater Macarthur Priority Growth areas.

Latest news

May 2021 - Stage 3 safety improvements to be completed from Sunday 16 May

The third and final stage of the latest round of safety improvements for Picton Road is set to be completed next week.

This project is being delivered as part of a $6.9 million package of work under the NSW Safer Roads Program. This stage was originally only funded for investigations and development but cost savings on the first two stages of work have allowed Transport for NSW to deliver the final upgrade ahead of schedule.

This work will involve changing line markings on Picton Road between Mount Keira Road and Mount Ousley Road to create a widened centre median, delivering increased safety for motorists.

Work will be carried out for three nights from Sunday 16 to Tuesday 18 May between 8pm and 5am, weather permitting.

A reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place during work hours and the road will be reduced to one lane.

Motorists are advised to follow the directions of signs and traffic control and should allow up to five minutes additional travel time.

Transport for NSW thanks road users for their patience while this work takes place and will keep the community updated about plans to deliver future safety improvements on Picton Road.

Project information

Background

The project is part of a $6.9 million package of safety improvements for Picton Road funded under the Safer Roads Program. The new section of median barrier will link to the median barrier installed on Picton Road in June 2019 east of this location.

There were four crashes reported in this area over five years up to 30 June 2019 resulting in one fatality, one serious injury and one moderate injury.

This work will improve safety at this location by reducing the risk of head-on crashes, providing a barrier between vehicles and roadside hazards as well as providing more room for vehicles to recover.

Transport for NSW and the Department of Planning are working together to identify priorities and further potential improvements along the Picton Road corridor including safety improvements and capacity upgrades.

In the 10 years from 2006 to 2016 traffic volumes on Picton Road, east of the Hume Motorway have grown from 13,510 to 24,056 vehicles each day. From 2007 to 2018 traffic volumes on Picton Road west of Mt Keira Road have grown from 11,084 to 20,032 vehicles each day.

Around 3400 heavy vehicles use Picton Road daily, including around 470 B-Doubles

Overview

The Australian and NSW Governments have funded over $60 million in safety improvements on Picton Road since 2010, with the number of crashes falling by almost 25 per cent in recent years and the incidence of head-on crashes falling by almost 80 per cent.

Safety improvements include:

  • Installing median safety barriers
  • Upgrading interchange with Hume Motorway and installing traffic signals
  • Installing acceleration lanes from rest areas
  • Shoulder and centre lane widening
  • Building a fauna underpass and fauna fencing
  • Audio tactile line marking
  • Upgrading the westbound rest area

Benefits

  • Improved safety for all road users by reducing the risk of head on and run off road crashes.
  • Providing more room for vehicles to recover.
  • Wildlife protection.
