Repairs and safety improvements in the Royal National Park

Reviewed

Project overview

The Royal National Park has experienced flooding and major damage to roads and other infrastructure after unprecedented rain levels since 2022. Significant landslides occurred at McKell Avenue and Garie Road, resulting in restricted access at McKell Avenue and a full closure of Garie Road.

McKell Avenue landslip repair works were completed in September 2025, and repairs to Garie Road are now complete and the road is open to traffic from Thursday 25 September 2025. See more information on Garie Road repairs below. Transport for NSW is working with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and other stakeholders to repair roads and deliver safety improvements in the Royal National Park.

Latest news

Repair work on Garie Road is now complete and access to Garie Beach in the Royal National Park is restored following the completion of a $22 million upgrade of Garie Road.

The road was re-opened on Thursday 25 September 2025 after more than two years of complex and difficult work.

Garie Road was severely damaged by the historic levels of rainfall in 2022 and was closed for Transport for NSW to carry out essential repairs.

In what was a complex engineering task, a section of the road was moved further
into the hill, while 89 15 metre-deep concrete piles were driven into the side of the road along a length of more than 150 metres to secure it.

New guard fencing and drainage improvements – including installation of an additional drainage system and two new gutters – were also part of the work.

Other upgrades include a new asphalt road surface, line marking, signage, and pavement preparation.

The remedial work means the road is stronger than before and now has greater resilience to future significant weather events.

Audley Road slope and culvert repairs

Embankments are being stabilised and drainage improved on Audley Road, Audley.

Work is expected to continue until late November 2025, weather permitting.

Specific closure dates will be advertised on electronic road signs through the area.

During overnight road closures, a detour will be in place via Princes Highway and McKell Avenue.

Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs and allow additional travel time when planning your journey.

Transport for NSW understands and appreciates the inconvenience this causes to National Park visitors and the local community.

Audley Weir

A range of upgrades to improve access and safety are underway at Audley Weir to address disruptions caused by increased rainfall and flooding, with more improvements in the pipeline.

A temporary electronic message sign has been installed at the intersection of Sir Bertram Stevens Drive and Bundeena Drive to notify road users of weir closures, replacing the ageing ‘flip-signs’ previously in place. This will improve the reliability of information for the community.

In addition, automated gates will be installed at both sides of the weir to stop vehicles from crossing during flooding. This project is now in the design phase and the community will be notified when construction is expected to start.

Permanent electronic signs are installed at multiple locations ensure road users are given advanced warnings of weir closures. These locations can be found on the map below.

New live-traffic cameras have been installed to monitor flood levels at the weir. The Live Traffic website will have the latest information on closures, displaying live cameras of the weir.
