Transport for NSW and Bega Valley Shire Council: Vision for Snug Cove, Eden

Transport for NSW, in partnership with Bega Valley Shire Council, has developed an exciting vision for new boating facilities and public domain upgrades in Snug Cove, Eden. The proposal includes:

  • 79 floating vessel berths
  • landscaping to enhance the Snug Cove public domain
  • a new maritime ancillary building.

These enhancements aim to enrich the local maritime precinct, creating a vibrant space for residents and visitors alike.

The project’s funding application under the Australian Government's $400 million Federal Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program was unsuccessful. Transport for NSW remains committed to collaborating with NSW Regional Development and Bega Valley Shire Council to explore opportunities that support the project's long-term vision and community benefits.

Community Consultation

In July 2024, Transport for NSW conducted public consultation on the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) planning approval, outlining the environmental assessment and concept plans. We appreciate the community’s invaluable feedback, which has been incorporated into the Submissions Report (PDF, 13.5 MB).  This report is now available, and we thank everyone who participated.

Port of Eden Stakeholder Group

Transport for NSW Maritime and the Port Authority of NSW are establishing a Port of Eden Stakeholder Group to foster collaboration among key stakeholders, community members, and industry representatives. This group will provide a platform for ongoing communication and coordination regarding planning proposals, port activities, and initiatives within Snug Cove and the surrounding area.

Expressions of Interest for membership in the Port of Eden Stakeholder Group will close on 28 February 2025, with the Terms of Reference and application form available on the Port Authority of NSW website

We are committed to keeping the community informed as the project progresses and thank you for your continued support and engagement.

March 2024 - Project update

Transport for NSW continues to work on funding opportunities to deliver the Snug Cove Maritime Precinct for the Eden community. This includes partnering with Bega Valley Shire Council in applying for funding under the Australian Government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (RPPP).

The joint application for funding will include the following:

  • 79 floating berths
  • Landscaping to improve the Port of Eden area
  • A small ancillary building

The scope of the proposal may change based on funding and further approvals.

Applications for the Partnerships Program have closed and we are awaiting a decision on whether our application was successful. We will keep the community updated on any progress.

August 2023 – Review of proposal for the Snug Cove Precinct is completed

The review of two proposal received for the Snug Cove Maritime Precinct has been completed.

Following the evaluation of the proposals Transport for NSW is unable to move forward with these, due to various commercial and risk related factors.

We had hoped that Snug Cove Marine Precinct would attract more interest from the private sector to invest in this unique partnership opportunity. However, we believe the current economic climate particularly in the construction industry may have impacted this process at this time.

We are continuing to explore other potential avenues and options for the development of the Snug Cove Maritime Precinct.

Unfortunately, this was not the outcome we had hoped for. Right now, we need to work with several areas of Government on next steps.

This may take some time, as we reset the project and we will update the when we have further information.

Project background

The first step was improving the harbour’s infrastructure with the $36 million Eden Safe Harbour Project, which includes the construction of a 366-metre wave attenuator to improve maritime safety, reliability and accessibility for all users.

The NSW Government’s Maritime Infrastructure Plan identifies Eden as a critical investment location to support the commercial fishing industry, tourism and recreational boating visitation in NSW. Located between Sydney and Melbourne, Eden is a significant maritime hub on the South Coast of NSW. It also supports one of the largest fishing fleets in the state, the Royal Australian Navy and Bega Valley region’s timber industry.

In 2022 Transport Transport invited expressions of interest from interested commercial parties, with the necessary experience and capability to undertake development(s) within the Precinct in partnership with the NSW Government, We were unable to move forward with this due to various commercial and risk related factors.

In 2024 Transport for NSW, in partnership with Bega Valley Shire Council, has developed an exciting vision for new boating facilities and public domain upgrades in Snug Cove, Eden.

We are committed to keeping the community informed as the project progresses and thank you for your continued support and engagement.
