Celebrating the UCI

In September 2022, Wollongong hosted the UCI Road World Championships – one of the world’s top five annual sporting events.

Transport for NSW will be painting new line markings from Helensburgh to North Wollongong to commemorate the UCI 2022 Cycle Race Route.

The blue line will be painted along the race route, with some diversions to ensure the safety of riders and motorists.

We will be delivering this work in stages

  • Stage One is between Walker Street at Cowper Lane, Helensburgh and Lawrence Hargrave Drive at Wrexham Road, Thirroul.
  • The next stages will be between Wrexham Road, Thirroul, finishing at Marine Driver (Lang Park), North Wollongong.

Work on Stage One will start on 3 October 2023.

We are working closely with Wollongong City Council to plan for the next stages of line marking. More details including the timing of installation will be provided to the community when available.

FAQs

  • Why has Transport for NSW installed the blue line?
On 21 September 2022, the Hon. Paul Scully, Member for Wollongong and Minister for Planning and Public Spaces asked the NSW Government to commit to road makings to commemorate the UCI Championships.

On 28 September, the former Minister for Active Transport announced that new line markings would be installed as a reminder of the historic event.

UCI 2022 placed Wollongong on the global map for bicycle enthusiasts and the installation of the blue line will provide experienced riders the opportunity to take in the stunning surrounds of the Illawarra by following the race route.

  • What maintenance will be required?
Like the Sydney 2000 Olympics Marathon Line, this is a unique project where we will mark the line once. As such, ongoing maintenance is not part of the project.
  • Is the route safe for beginners?
As this is largely an on-road route, it is for experienced riders who are confident riding alongside, and with, vehicle traffic.
  • What impacts are there to residents along the commemorative route?
After the installation of the blue line, there will be no impacts to parking, residents or businesses.

A community notification advising residents of the night marking will be distributed one week prior to the work commencing.
