April 2024 – Plans to reopen Terania Street

Transport for NSW is looking to implement traffic calming measures in coming weeks with the aim to reopen Terania Street as soon as possible. We are currently working on design options to restrict heavy vehicle access and reduce vehicle speeds in order to prevent future bridge strikes.

In the meantime, the pedestrian footpath on Terania Street is now open. Read the latest project update (PDF, 581.27 KB) for more information.

Feb 2024 – Terania Steet is closed

Road users are advised that Terania Street will remain closed to all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists until a risk assessment has been completed to identify the work required to enable the road to be re-opened.

Project information

Background

An over height vehicle struck the disused rail bridge over Terania Street at Lismore on the afternoon of Wednesday 7 February 2024.

As a result, Terania Street was closed to pedestrian and traffic between Tweed and Peate streets.

Further inspections will be required to determine next steps and to ensure the road can be safely reopened to motorists.

A timeframe for this is still to be determined, however Transport is treating this as a high priority. The closure period is expected to be extensive.

Alexandra Parade

A similar event took place at the disused rail bridge over Alexandra Parade, North Lismore on Tuesday 20 February.

As a result, the 3.5 metre clearance single lane on Alexandra Parade was closed for further inspections.

The 2.8 metre clearance two way lanes on Alexandra Parade remain open to light vehicles only.

Further inspections will be required to determine next steps and to ensure the road can be safely reopened to motorists.

Transport thank the community for your patience and will keep the community up to date on the progress of the risk assessment.

Detour route – Terania Street closure

A detour for all heavy and light vehicles is available via Wilson Street, Elliott Road and Ballina Road.

Light vehicles can access Terania and Bridge streets via Dawson and Woodlark streets, which are not suitable for heavy vehicles.

Light vehicles with 2.4 metre clearance can access Tweed Street northbound from Terania Street via Pine and Crane streets.

Detour for pedestrians and cyclists is available from Terania Street via Pine, Crane and Tweed streets.

Motorists should allow up to 10 minutes extra travel time.

Heavy and light vehicle drivers should plan their journey and allow extra travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.

Detour for heavy vehicles travelling westbound is available via Winterton Parade, Orion Street, Dawson Street, Ballina Road, Elliott Road, Wilson Street, Terania Street and Tweed Street, vice versa for heavy vehicles travelling eastbound.

Heavy and light vehicle drivers should plan their journey and allow extra travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time.
