Inside the Wynyard Station Upgrade

With intelligently designed space, more people are able to access, exit and move easily through Wynyard Station. Adding facilities such as a lift at the York Street entrance, safer escalators, and new and upgraded stairs have reduced queues and crowding.

At TfNSW we want the station to be a pleasant place for everyone. We have installed better facilities, with new fixtures and fittings to create a lighter and brighter station. Behind the scenes, staff will also have an improved work area.

We are committed to making it easier to move in and around Wynyard Station. Wayfinding, signage, more ticket gates, and de-cluttered train platforms and concourse areas all contribute to the safer flow of people.

Customers now also experience an increase in the number, efficiency and reliability of train services. We aim to keep trains running on time and stop running services that are not needed. With a streamlined station layout, getting on and off trains will be safer and easier too.

By creating capacity for more trains and passengers, we keep our services in line with future demand from the Barangaroo precinct and Sydney’s financial district.

Wynyard Station Upgrade has created a new gateway

The upgraded Wynyard Station connects with Wynyard Walk and Barangaroo Ferry Wharf. This has significantly improved and sped up access for passengers and pedestrians moving to and from Barangaroo and Sydney’s CBD

Wynyard Station Upgrade planning and heritage

Conditional Section 60 approval was received on 20 July 2016 from the Heritage Council of NSW for upgrades to the wooden escalators at the York Street entrance.

The Council also approved the Heritage Interpretation Strategy on 21 December 2016. This acknowledges the heritage significance of the York Street entrance and details how we will meet the terms of conditional approval. The new entrance design will keep some heritage elements such as timber decking and re-use wooden treads from the escalator.
