Spit Road corridor traffic improvements

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government is introducing two traffic improvements to ease congestion and reduce travel times along the Spit Road corridor.

Project information

Spit Bridge tidal flow changes

Roads and Maritime Services has changed the hours of operation of the Spit Bridge morning tidal flow.

From Monday 19 August the Spit Bridge lane tidal flow changed to two lanes in each direction at about 9.30am on weekdays.

This allows more northbound vehicles to cross the Spit Bridge, which will ease congestion and improve the travel times for road users.

No changes were made to the current tidal flow arrangements at Pearl Bay Avenue or anywhere else on Spit Road. Afternoon and weekend arrangements will remain the same.

What is a tidal flow?

A tidal flow is a reversible lane where traffic can travel in either direction depending on the time of day or traffic conditions. Tidal flows improve traffic flow during peak periods by making an extra lane available for vehicles travelling along the busier side of the road.

The Spit Bridge tidal flow is a lane management system which uses movable orange posts to show the live lane arrangements and to separate the traffic travelling in opposite directions.

Clearways

Clearways along Spit Road, Manly Road and Burnt Bridge Creek

We also introduced new and extended 4 kilometre clearways along Spit Road, Manly Road and Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation between Medusa Street, Mosman to Condamine Street, Balgowlah.

The clearways will operate in both directions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What is a clearway?

A clearway is a section of road where stopping and parking is not allowed during designated times that are shown on a clearway sign. If a vehicle is parked in a clearway during its hours of operation, it will risk being towed and fines applied.

The only exception is the stopping of buses and taxis dropping off or picking up passengers as well as emergency vehicles and postal vehicles accessing a public post box.
