Early work on the Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection upgrade project has now been completed. 

Transport for NSW thanks for the community for their patience while early work took place and had some impact on traffic in the area. 

The tender period for the major construction contract closed in February 2023. Tender applications are currently being reviewed and an announcement for the award of the major construction contract is expected to be made later this year 

Major construction work is expected to begin in late 2023.

Early work has started on the Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection upgrade project. Early work involves demolition, property adjustments like fence and gate relocations, minor clearing and environmental works such as nest box installation.

The early works contract has been awarded to Insite Remediation Services. Around 20 jobs will be supported as part of the early works.

During the early work there will be some traffic impacts. Every effort will be made to minimise impacts.

The major works construction tender is currently open. We expect this contract to be awarded and major construction work to begin in 2023.

The Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway upgrade project environmental assessment has been approved. Early work is on track to start in late 2022.

The detailed design contract has also been awarded to Arcadis Australia Pacific Pty Ltd and detailed design work has started. This work will include finalising the design of the project before construction starts.

Submission report released

Transport received 146 submissions on the concept design and environmental assessment in mid-2021. Feedback raised a number of considerations around traffic and safety impacts as well as other matters related to property, biodiversity and Aboriginal heritage.

Improvements following design changes and community feedback

The concept design includes a grade separated interchange, or flyover, with roundabouts on either side of Jervis Bay Road.

Following a review of feedback and more design work, important refinements have been made to the project.

These include:

• Better connection with the planned Princes Highway upgrade further south of the intersection
• Extension of the northbound on-ramp and merge length for safer entry to the Princes Highway
• Safer access to local roads including Old Princes Highway and Willowgreen Road
• Changes to improve wildlife connectivity.

Consultation now complete

Transport for NSW thanks the community for providing feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and concept design for the Jervis Bay Road and Princes Highway intersection upgrade. The proposal would deliver safer and more reliable journeys along the South Coast.

Feedback is now being reviewed.

We are analysing the community feedback received late last year and preparing a concept design and environmental assessment for the project. These will be on display for community feedback in 2021. Work on the intersection upgrade is on track to start in late 2022.

A grade separated interchange, or flyover, was identified as the preferred option in November 2020 and displayed for community consultation. Consultation closed on Sunday 20 December 2020.

In consultations in March 2020, the community told us safety for transport users and less congestion are key priorities for an intersection upgrade. Transport investigated a range of options and determined the preferred option would be the safest option and provide the best results for congestion, resilience and connectivity compared to other options assessed.

We have moved to the next phase of design of the Jervis Bay Road intersection upgrade, by releasing a consultation report following community feedback earlier this year and engaging Arcadis Australia Pacific Pty Ltd to undertake concept design and environmental assessment for the project.

In 2020 we held a 30 minute Facebook Live session with Princes Highway Program Director, Paul Vecovski, and Project Manager, Matthew Burns, to answer questions about the project.
