Stacey Street, Bankstown

Transport for NSW has completed improvements to the widening of Stacey Street northbound, to provide an additional lane between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street.

Upgrades have been carried out at the intersections of Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street. Funded under the NSW Government’s $300 million Gateway to the South Pinch Point Program which aims to ease congestion and improve journey reliability on Sydney’s key western corridors.

Around 70,000 vehicles travel along Stacey Street, Bankstown, every day. It is ranked the fourth slowest road in Sydney and the seventh slowest in Australia, with average southbound speeds of just 18kmh during the PM peak 1.

The Stacey Street upgrade will increase the number of lanes in each direction from two to three and improve the efficiency of local intersections.

• upgrading existing street lighting on Stacey Street; southbound between Salvia and Daphne avenues, and northbound between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street - completed May 2019
• providing new guard rails on Stacey Street southbound, between Salvia and Daphne avenues - completed May 2019
• extending the right turn bay from Stacey Street onto Stanley Street to reduce southbound congestion - expected completion 2021
• installing new pedestrian crossing lights and pram facilities at Salvia Avenue - expected completion 2021

In February 2018, Transport for NSW proposed widening Stanley Street (PDF, 554Kb) to incorporate an additional right turning lane onto Stacey Street. This would have involved the loss of open space and removal of trees in Stevens Reserve. Following responses from local residents and Canterbury Bankstown Council, Transport for NSW elected not to proceed with this element of the upgrade.

We amended our design to relocate the pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Stacey Street, Macauley Avenue and Fairford Road from the southern leg of the intersection to the northern side. This prioritised the safety of pedestrians, ensuring they can cross the road without needing to wait at the crossing island.

All other proposed improvements were incorporated into the second stage of construction, providing more immediate congestion and safety benefits for local residents.
