Southern Hume duplication

About the project

The project was completed under a Memorandum of Understanding for the Accelerated Southern Hume Duplication Package.

The Australian Government allocated $800 million in accordance with the AusLink (National Land Transport) Act 2005.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) managed these works.

This package of works duplicated 67km of the Hume Highway in southern NSW by the end of 2009, leaving only 20km of highway as single carriageway at that time. The bypasses at Tarcutta, Holbrook and Woomargama required more complex planning, community consultation and environmental assessment.

The duplication of the Hume Highway from the Sturt Highway to Holbrook was constructed by a project team consisting of TfNSW, Leighton Contractors, AECOM, Coffey Partners and SMC, known as the Northern Hume Alliance.

The duplication of the Hume Highway from Woomargama to Table Top was constructed by a project team consisting of TfNSW, Abigroup and Sinclair Knight Merz, known as the Hume Highway Southern Alliance.

These works have significantly improved road safety for all motorists and improved transport efficiency for communities and industries along this major freight route.
