Appin Road Safety Improvements

Reviewed

Project overview

The Australian government is funding safety improvement work along Appin Road in Gilead.

Project information

Background

Appin Road is a major arterial road supporting travel and freight movement across 3 Local Government Areas (LGAs). It also plays a key role in connecting the township of Appin to employment, education and services in larger areas such as Campbelltown and Wollongong.

Issues with road safety have been identified for Appin Road due to the existing road conditions, relatively high volume of traffic and vehicle crash history.

Features and Benefits

The proposed safety improvements would:

  • Provide smoother, safer trips for motorists with wider lanes, wider shoulder widths, increased clear zones and improved road surface
  • Improve safety with the installation of safety barriers
  • Create a new overtaking opportunity for northbound traffic to improve traffic flow
  • Install a new northbound U-turn facility to improve safety for residents entering and exiting driveways
  • Realign a road curve with painted median and safety barrier to improve safety
  • Install koala exclusion fencing and koala grids along the road corridor to protect koalas. See Appin Road Upgrade and Brian Road Intersection Upgrade for more information on koala protection and connectivity.

Latest Updates

The community was invited to provide feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) in 2018. Shortly following consultation, biodiversity concerns were raised and as a result, we’ve undertaken further investigations to mitigate these concerns.

We are preparing an addendum to the approved REF which will outline the changes proposed. Once completed, we will put the Addendum REF on public display and invite the community to have their say.

Next steps

  1. Preliminary site investigations

Biodiversity is the variety of life forms, including flora and fauna, the genes they contain and the ecosystems in which they live. Transport strives to protect and enhance biodiversity with the goal of achieving no net loss of biodiversity.
