Ousedale Creek Koala Underpass

Reviewed

Project overview

Appin Road is a major arterial road supporting travel to and from the south-west Sydney region and Wollongong area. The Ouesdale Creek Koala Underpass project (formerly known as Brian Road Intersection Upgrade) will deliver a fauna underpass and other mitigation measures to protect local koala and wildlife populations.

July 2025 - Project update

A Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the Brian Road Intersection Upgrade Project (now known as the Ousedale Creek Koala Underpass) was placed on public display for community feedback between 25 January and 24 February 2023.

Transport would like to thank the community for their feedback, which has been considered as part of the planning approval process.

The project has now been determined and feedback received has been responded to in a Submissions Report (PDF, 1.8 MB)

Project information

What we are doing

To help protect local wildlife, koala exclusion fencing and a koala underpass will be constructed at the intersection of Appin Road and Brian Road. The underpass will connect the koala population around Ousedale Creek with the Georges River Reserve and Nepean Corridors. The koala underpass implements one of the key recommendations of the Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan and addresses a key issue identified in the Campbelltown Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management.

A contract will soon be awarded for the detailed design and construction of the project. The Ousedale Creek Koala Underpass is expected to start construction in 2026 and will take approximately two years to complete.

Features and Benefits

As a result of community feedback, from the Brians Road Intersection upgrade consultation, several changes were made to the project scope. These changes include:

  • removal of the proposed single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Appin Road and Brian Road and the road and embankment widening
  • reduction in the project footprint at the northern extent of the project site by around 250m
  • changing  the underpass design to a box culvert fauna underpass instead of the proposed reinforced concrete pipe underpass. The underpass will run in the same location under Appin Road approximately 35m south of the Brian Road intersection, near the Ousedale Creek Corridor
  • an additional koala grid across Brian Road at the western end of the project site
  • new koala escape poles and koala escape hatches:
    • on either side of Appin Road at the southern extent of the project site
    • just north of the intersection of Brian Road and Appin Road
    • on either side of Brian Road at the western extent of the project site
  • additional koala escape poles and fauna furniture at the fauna underpass entrances and in the underpass structure.
