Macquarie Fields Station Upgrade

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government is improving accessibility and safety at Macquarie Fields Station.

The Safe Accessible Transport program aims to make public transport safe, inclusive and easy to use for all passengers, especially people with disability, older people, people with prams or luggage and others who may be experiencing mobility challenges.

The project is expected to be completed in 2026.

Upcoming important changes to ramp access and parking

To facilitate the upgrade, the ramp to Platform 2 will be temporarily closed from 26 August until mid-2026. The stairs will remain available.

We recommend customers who require ramp or lift access visit transportnsw.info for information on their next nearest accessible station ahead of their journey.

Key benefits

  • A new passenger footbridge, connected by lifts and stairs with increased canopy coverage to the platforms and enhanced platform connections from Railway Parade.
  • Accessible parking spaces, accessible kiss and ride spaces, additional bike parking and a relocated bus stop on Railway Parade.
  • Upgraded station forecourt and greater pedestrian connections to the station including a new pedestrian crossing in front of the station entrance and upgrades to the associated footpaths and kerb ramps.
  • A new family accessible toilet and a new ambulant toilet.
  • New hearing loops to assist people with hearing loss.
  • Platform levelling, and installation of tactile ground surface indicators which assist passengers who are blind or have low vision.
  • Safety and security at the station and surrounding precinct will be enhanced through improved lighting, CCTV, and wayfinding signage.
  • Placemaking enhancements including Connecting with Country design elements.

Project status

From 6am until 6pm on Saturday 9 August and Saturday 30 August, we’ll be working during planned trackwork of the freight line, when the freight trains will not be running.

From 26 August 2025 to mid- 2026, we will also be relocating four accessible parking spaces further north on Railway Parade. Alternative commuter parking is available in the Council commuter car park on Railway Parade.

Overall construction is expected to take 18 months to complete, with project completion expected in late 2026.

Project history

Following public display of the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and consultation, the proposed upgrade of Macquarie Fields Station was approved to proceed in late October 2024.

What we have heard so far

Review of Environmental Factors feedback

In August-September 2024, Transport publicly displayed the REF for Macquarie Fields Station Upgrade. We invited community and stakeholder feedback on plans to provide an accessible station with improved amenity and safety for customers.

Key feedback included:

  • overall community support for the upgrade
  • retain existing parking numbers adjacent to the station specifically for commuters
  • increase the number of accessible kiss and ride and disability parking spaces
  • more canopy coverage to maximise comfort and shelter
  • improved lighting and safer road crossing points for safety and security
  • improved design integration with the existing environment and some aesthetic tweaks
  • better location and more opal card readers and passenger information displays
  • future proofing the footbridge and considerations for retail space in future developments
  • better integration of services into the wider railway network.

Feedback received has been considered by the Project Team and responses to feedback are available in the Determination Report (PDF, 2.33 MB). Feedback that related to items outside the scope of the proposal has been provided to the appropriate agency for consideration.

Early engagement

In March 2024, we engaged with the community and other stakeholders, and received around 60 submissions.

Feedback included:

  • overall support for the project and improving accessibility at Macquarie Fields Station
  • support for proposed safety enhancements and suggestions for additional measures such as ticket barriers, trimming overgrown trees to improve sight lines and provision of additional lighting and CCTV in and around the station
  • consideration for the inclusion of a retail kiosk for the convenience of customers and to increase passive surveillance
  • support for the designated Kiss and Ride zone, with a suggestion to review number of spaces and flow of traffic especially during peak period
  • request to include accessible ramps as an alternative for access when lifts are out of service
  • need to improve connectivity to the station by providing or upgrading surrounding footpaths, and requests to provide more frequent bus services connecting with train services, especially during off peak hours.

Preliminary Engagement

To help develop our concept design we also engaged with people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and women and girls from the local community. Targeted engagement included a Safer Cities Program workshop to understand women and girls’ perceptions of safety, and collaborative Connecting with Country events to understand the unique and enduring relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their ancestral lands, waters and natural resources.

Further detail on what we heard during this stage can be found within the March 2024 community update (PDF, 1.36 MB).

Transport is continuing to engage with City of Campbelltown Council and other key stakeholders to seek feedback on the concept design and precinct improvements.

Workshops with local people with disability

We want to hear from local people with disability and carers. Register to attend a workshop which will provide an opportunity to contribute valuable insights on accessibility needs and make a real difference for your local community.

These workshops will continue to occur throughout the design process. Participants will be provided a voucher at each stage or participation in exchange for their valuable involvement and feedback.
