Maintaining the bridge - Technology & maintenance - Sydney Harbour Bridge precinct
Project overview
As part of the commitment to maintain the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Transport for NSW conducts ongoing maintenance to ensure that this national icon is preserved for years to come.

Project information
Ongoing maintenance also includes repainting the bridge.
Updated line marking
We’ve enhanced line marking on the Sydney Harbour Bridge by repainting the lines between lanes 3 and 4, from the southern and northern approaches, and across the bridge road deck.
The updated line marking is longer and spaced closer together, matching the line marking already used between lanes 4 and 5. This will further assist motorists to recognise the area where the lane setup might be changed. Overhead signs will remain in place to show the current direction for each lane across the bridge.
Motorists should continue to follow traffic signs and speed limits.

Southern lift repairs
We've completed repairs to the glass panels in the lift on the southern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (near Cumberland Street). The next stage of work will involve removing the scaffolding.
Our general working hours are 8.30pm to 5.30am, Sunday to Thursday and the work is not expected to be noisy. We'll updated our website when dates are confirmed.
Staff on site will assist with managing pedestrian flow during our work. Please follow the signs and their instructions.
Alternative routes
During any lift closures, pedestrians can use the nearby stairs, the walkway to Circular Quay (which includes stairs), or public transport options such as trains (from Wynyard and Milsons Point. Visit Transport info for public transport trip planning information).
The lift on the northern end of the bridge remains open.
We appreciate your patience as we complete these essential works.

Lavender Street Heritage Rail Bridge
As part of our ongoing monitoring and maintenance program, we’ve installed temporary scaffolding, a support structure, and sensors within the Heritage Rail Bridge, located over Lavender Street.
The sensors give us information about the bridge’s condition and will help to guide future maintenance work.
We’ll update this page with any key planned maintenance activities.
