Sydney Harbour Bridge access lifts - Access projects - Sydney Harbour Bridge precinct

The Sydney Harbour Bridge Access Lifts are now open and operational 24 hours a day.

We are still working at The Rocks site to complete landscaping and refurbishment work of the City of Sydney building on Cumberland Street next to the new lift. Work at the northern lift has now been completed.

Roads and Maritime Services has installed lifts to the Sydney Harbour Bridge pedestrian walkway at Kirribilli and The Rocks to ensure everybody can enjoy the experience of being on one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks.

Roads and Maritime Services carried out extensive work to investigate preferred locations for the lift access, taking into account the heritage value, accessibility standards, visual impacts and integration with the existing structure.

Construction of the new lifts was completed between March 2018 and December 2018.
Work to build the new lifts involved:

• setting up site compounds and installing construction signage
• removing part of the City of Sydney building at 7 Cumberland Street, The Rocks and landscaping the area
• removing two trees on Cumberland Street, The Rocks
• installing one lift on Broughton Street, Kirribilli
• installing one lift on Cumberland Street, The Rocks
• building new platforms to connect the lifts to the existing walkway
• removing and relocating existing utilities
• removing and replacing 300 metres of asphalt and adjusting the stormwater system at the southern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge pedestrian walkway

The Review of Environmental Factors was on display for public feedback in November 2017. Roads and Maritime has prepared a report responding to all of the issues raised in the submissions received.
