Project information

Background

The NSW Government has provided a total of $35 million to replace sections of the concrete pavement surface on the Hume Highway at Marulan.

The Marulan bypass, which was built in 1986 as part of the Hume Highway upgrade, is 7.5 kilometres long and is located about 31km north of Goulburn.

Due to an increasing number of vehicles using the highway each year, the condition of the road has deteriorated and ongoing maintenance expenses are increasing.

To improve driving conditions for motorists the existing concrete pavement will be replaced with a flexible pavement with a thick asphalt surface.

Benefits

  • a smoother driving experience for motorists
  • lower ongoing maintenance costs and requirements
  • more efficient and safer journeys
  • reduced wear and tear on vehicles
  • maintaining and improving road safety
  • improving freight productivity and reliability.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

General

  • What is the Marulan bypass pavement rehabilitation project?

The Marulan bypass, which was built in 1986 as part of the Hume Highway upgrade, is 7.5 kilometres long and is located about 31km north of Goulburn.

Due to an increasing number of vehicles using the highway each year and age of the road, its condition has deteriorated.

The project will focus on repairing the pavement of a section of the southbound lanes near Marulan to improve driver experience and safety

  • What is the cost of the project?
The NSW Government has provided a total of $35 million.
  • Where is the project up to?

Construction documents are being finalised and the project will go out to tender later this year.

An additional u-turn facility is being investigated for future maintenance work and to assist traffic management during work.

Further concrete slab maintenance and asphalt repair work will be carried out on sections of the bypass which are outside of the project area.

Noise and traffic studies have been carried to further understand noise and traffic impacts.

  • When will construction start?
Before construction can start, several important milestones must be met. These include: traffic and noise studies, finalising construction documents, requesting tenders from qualified contractors for the construction and awarding the contract to the successful tenderer.

Project features

  • What are the benefits?
    • A smoother driving experience for transport customers
    • Reduce future maintenance
    • Lower ongoing maintenance costs
    • More efficient and safer journeys
    • Maintaining and improving road safety
    • Improving freight productivity and reliability.

Construction impacts

  • How will the community be impacted during construction?

Construction activities will be staged to minimise impacts on transport customers however there will be some temporary impacts to allow us to safely carry out work.

Temporary traffic changes during work hours will include contraflow, reduced speed limits, lane closures and minor detours.

Access will be maintained for local roads that connect into the highway.

Some speed reductions will remain in place outside of work hours for the safety of workers and transport customers.

Transport customers and nearby residents will be notified in advance of this work.

  • What are the project construction work hours?
We will work 24 hours a day between midnight on Sunday and midday on Friday. There will be no work during weekends, NSW and ACT public holidays and school holidays.

Noise

  • What are the noise impacts?

We understand noise can cause disruption to local communities during construction. There will be temporary noise from construction activities.

Noise and traffic studies have been carried out to further understand noise and traffic impacts.

  • How will construction noise be managed?

Residents who live near our work sites may hear noise. Construction noise is temporary and often changes as work progresses.

We will be in contact with you throughout construction about how our work may impact you.

Heavy Vehicles

  • What are the impacts to heavy vehicles?

There will be temporary closures to the Marulan heavy vehicle safety stations during work.

Some speed reductions will remain in place outside of work hours for the safety of workers and transport customers.
