Project information

Background

The Australian and NSW Governments are investing $40 million to upgrade the intersection of the Newell Highway and Oxley Highway, four kilometres north-east of Coonabarabran. The intersection links two key routes, north-south on the Newell Highway between Goondiwindi, Queensland and Shepparton, Victoria and east-west on the Oxley Highway between Port Macquarie and Warren.

The existing intersection is a T junction with priority given to Oxley Highway traffic over Newell Highway traffic. The upgraded intersection will improve travel time and help to reduce the risk of crashing at this location.

Benefits

  • support more efficient movement of freight
  • reduce the crash rate at the intersection
  • improve travel time on this section of the Newell Highway
