Spring Creek Bridge replacement

Spring Creek Bridge is a major crossing over Spring Creek on the Kamilaroi Highway, located 9.5 kilometres west of Narrabri.

The bridge is an important link for road users travelling on the Kamilaroi Highway between Narrabri and Wee Waa, as well as for the local community and agricultural industry.

The existing bridge is an eight-cell cast in-situ reinforced concrete box culvert structure which was built in 1968.

Spring Creek Bridge has previously been subject to heavy vehicle restrictions and detours while essential safety works were carried out to reinforce the bridge structure.

This project will see the existing bridge replaced with a new, wider bridge that meets modern design standards, and current and future road network requirements.

Its replacement will be a stronger, longer lasting structure which will improve access for wide loads and improve safety for all vehicles.

Project benefits include:

• improved safety for road users
• stronger, longer lasting bridge
• improved access for freight by providing a wider bridge
• reduced ongoing maintenance costs.

Qualified contractors have been invited to tender to lead the bridge replacement project. It is expected that the contract will be awarded in mid 2024.

Work to construct a temporary sealed side track around the project site has been completed and will be used to provide safe, two-lane traffic flow on the Kamilaroi Highway while the bridge replacement is under way.
