Victoria Pass Slope Repairs

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW has carried out extensive investigations to inform the complex repair work for extreme weather damaged to 2 embankments on the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass.

Transport for NSW (Transport) has finished repairs to two damaged slopes on the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass.

In July 2022 extreme weather damaged two embankments on the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass. A downslope embankment failure east of Mitchells Causeway, and an upslope failure west of the causeway, caused significant impacts to the Great Western Highway.

We are pleased to announce that all lanes of the highway are now open to traffic, ahead of schedule and in time for the Christmas holidays.

Current status

Since construction began in April 2025, crews have worked hard to repair the two damaged slopes.

The completion of the project means that there will be no further night closures of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass, and the road is now restored to full traffic capacity.

Steps to recovery

  1. Investigation works
  2. Geotechnical design and environmental assessment
  3. Vegetation clearing and drainage works
  4. Stabilising the slope
  5. Road returns to full operation. (we are here)
