Using the Playbook

Get involved

The Playbook is a LIVING LIBRARY.

We are using it to share knowledge and learnings and aggregate resources, so you can find the information you need to deliver smart places.

This means it is never complete and you can play an active role in building it.

Provide and share feedback

  • Is the Playbook easy to use?
  • Is there information missing?
  • Send us case studies and tools that may be useful to others.
  • Share lessons you have learned that can benefit others.

Email: smartplaces@planning.nsw.gov.au

Throughout the Playbook you will see opportunities to provide feedback.

Who is the Playbook for?

The Playbook will assist anyone planning, designing, delivering and managing communities and suburbs, public land, open spaces, community facilities and infrastructure, to integrate smart solutions, including:

  • NSW Government employees
  • Local government employees
  • Private landowners and developers
  • Consultants supporting these groups
  • Planners and urban designers
  • Smart and digital practitioners
  • Technology vendors and other industry practitioners.

Customers of smart places (anyone who visits, lives, works or invests in smart places) may also benefit from understanding how smart places are created and managed so they can participate in their development and operation.

How is the Playbook structured?

The Playbook is structured using an adapted development life cycle for smart places.

In Discover, you will define your place and set out the outcomes you want to achieve with the people who will live, work, play and invest there. After Discover, you will have the knowledge needed to start designing solutions.

During the Design phase you will work with industry to determine the connected solutions that can help you meet the needs of your place. By the end of this stage, you will have a plan for the technology, physical and digital assets you will need to deploy your solutions.

During the Create phase you will deliver on your plan and transition from planning to implementation and operation.

And finally, the Manage and Review section provides guidance on how to monitor, maintain and review your solutions so they can be improved, and value realisation can be assessed.

The Playbook homepage shows you the content of each section.

Depending on where you are on your Smart Places journey, you can use the Playbook end to end or visit sections as needed.
