Active Transport Community of Practice

A monthly forum for NSW council staff and Transport staff to come together and share best practice on active transport initiatives and projects.

The Alfred St Bridge (opened in October 2023) provides a walking and riding connection over the Parramatta River.

The Active Transport Community of Practice aims to:

  • foster a professional network of Active Transport practitioners
  • encourage NSW councils to share best practice projects and lessons learned
  • increase the capability of NSW council staff and Transport for NSW (Transport) staff in relation to Active Transport projects and initiatives.

Get Kids Active, FY2025/26Transport for NSWThe Get Kids Active program is all about making it safer, easier and more fun for kids to walk and ride to and from school. 
 School Zone Infrastructure Sub ProgramTransport for NSWThe School Zone Infrastructure Sub Program is making it safer for pedestrians on their way to and from school, and when walking within school zones throughout Regional NSW. 
 Local Government Road Safety ProgramTransport for NSWThe Local Government Road Safety Program (LGRSP) is a partnership between Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and participating local Councils in NSW. The program provides up to 50 per cent funding contribution to the salary of a Road Safety Officer and funding for local road safety projects. By developing effective partnerships with Councils, locally based road safety initiatives can be delivered to their communities.
 Roads to Home ProgramRoads to Home funded by Department of Planning, Housing and InfrastructureRoads to Home Program is a community led planning and infrastructure program addressing longstanding access inequality experienced by 61 discrete Aboriginal communities across NSW. 
 Community Improvement District PilotTransport for NSWThe program will deliver trial CID pilots across NSW that test the viability of diverse governance models and strengthen local place economy. 
 Safer Cities Program Transport for NSWThe Safer Cities Program has invested $30 million to help improve perceptions of safety in our cities and towns, particularly for women, girls and gender diverse people.

 ReVITALise - Public Transport Precinct Vibrancy GrantTransport for NSWThe Program will enliven people’s everyday walk or wheel to and from public transport by embedding vibrancy, amenity and creativity along the first and last mile. 
 Regional Growth FundNSW GovernmentThe Regional Growth fund ran from 2017 to 2023 through several grant programs designed to improve local and regional services, promote economic development and social cohesion, and enhance social wellbeing of people living and working in regional NSW.
 Safe and Liveable Urban Communities InitiativeTransport for NSWThe Safe and Liveable Communities initiative aims to improve the safety of people in urban areas, through infrastructure safety upgrades for pedestrians and bicycle riders, and by specifically addressing serious injury crashes in urban areas.

Road Safety Program 2023/24 - 2025/26Transport for NSW with the Australian GovernmentThis grant was launched in early 2024 to fund road safety treatments. $91.8 million of funding is available to councils across NSW.
Applications closed on 2 September 2024 Thriving Suburbs ProgramDepartment of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the ArtsThe program delivers funding to local government entities and incorporated not-for-profit organisations for capital works projects that enhance liveability, strengthen social cohesion and support local amenity in urban, suburban and peri-urban communities across Australia.
