Road Maintenance and Road Asset Management

TfNSW engages external providers to provide routine road maintenance and asset management services to state roads across Sydney’s road network. Some of these services include road pavement work, corridor upgrades, minor improvement works, special event management and Intelligent Transport System.

Intelligent Transport System comprises of traffic control systems, variable message and variable speed signs, and traffic monitoring devices. Regular maintenance and upgrade of these systems assist road users to be better informed and make safer and smarter use of our transport network.

Greater Sydney is divided into three road maintenance zones and the contractors started their operations on 1 July 2021. The contracts were awarded to ConnectSydney (Harbour zone), Fulton Hogan (River zone) and Ventia (Parkland zone).

All our service providers operate under performance indicators which focus on safety, customer engagement, time performance and road surface quality.

Assets under maintenance

The following asset types (with numbers across Greater Sydney) are maintained regularly to keep road users safe and flowing on the network:

  • 2,603kms (7,122 lane km) of State Roads including:
    • 11,000km of line markings
    • 758km of median strips
    • 522km of Safety Barriers
    • 441km of Noise walls
    • 15,967 Drainage culverts
  • 3,289km Cycleways
  • 6,869 School Zone Alert systems (across all of NSW)
  • 5,000 Traffic signals
  • 117,712 Traffic signs
  • 819 bridges (not including Sydney Harbour Bridge precinct or Motorways).
