Como Station Upgrade

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government has improved accessibility at Como Station.

The upgrade was delivered as part of the Transport Access Program, an initiative to provide a better experience for public transport customers by delivering accessible, modern, secure and integrated infrastructure across the state.

Key benefits

  • Two new lifts connecting the platform and commuter car park to the underpass.
  • Upgraded station entry at the commuter car park, including new stairs to connect to the underpass.
  • Relocated 3 existing accessible parking spaces closer to the new lifts.
  • Upgrades to existing ramp from Railway Road to meet compliant grade, and new accessible pathways throughout the station precinct.
  • Formalised kiss and ride area on Railway Road.
  • Improved amenities such as new male and female ambulant toilets, a new family accessible toilet, CCTV and lighting.
  • Redesign of new stairs to connect customers from Como Parade to the underpass to replace the existing non compliant ramp.
  • The solar glass system is designed to produce 58 kWh of clean, renewable energy every day. This is equivalent to powering 3 average Sutherland Shire households every day.
  • The solar glass system will offset 185 tonnes of CO2 in the first 10 years of operation. This is equivalent to removing 80 average NSW cars off the road.
  • The glass canopy will allow natural light to illuminate the underpass and create an aesthetic tiled pattern across the station.

Solar glass

As part of the Como Station upgrade, a canopy was installed bridging the new lift with the existing station building. As part of our commitment to innovation, clean energy and future smart solutions, a new solar glass solution was selected as the canopy cover. A first for the NSW rail network, the upgrade included the installation of a solar photovoltaic glass canopy, a demonstration of Transport’s commitment to innovation, clean energy and future smart solutions.

Public Art

The station upgrade includes unique features including murals painted by Indigenous artist Merindah Funnell. Merinda worked in collaboration with local elder, Aunty Deanna Schreiber, and together they developed the idea for the artworks.

The murals embrace design elements of the Wiradjuri culture, focusing on the layering of country, land, water, air and community. Other unique features include the reproduction of historic photographs of Como station on the concrete wall of the ramp, leading from Railway Road, using Concrete Reckli, a technique used to transfer photos onto Concrete facades.

Project status

Como Station Upgrade is complete and the station is now accessible, allowing for safer, easier and more convenient travel for all customers.

Customers are able to use the station's two new lifts and improved accessibility features.

Transport for NSW would like to thank the community for their continued support and cooperation during the upgrade work.
