June 2025 - Heritage assessment submitted for remaining underbridges

Following the removal of the rail bridge on Terania Street in late 2024, Heritage Council of NSW (Heritage Council) requested that Transport consider the heritage significance of the remaining state heritage-listed rail bridges in the North Lismore area. As a part of this requirement, Transport submitted a heritage assessment to Heritage Council for consideration in June 2025.

This process will help inform future management strategies for the rail-over-road structures at Crane Street, Union Street and Alexandra Parade, and support Transport’s efforts to address safety and traffic concerns at Alexandra Parade.

While the submission is complete, the review process may take some time. We will keep the community updated as information becomes available.

Project information

Background

The Lismore railway bridges are a group of rail-over-road bridges located along the non-operational Casino to Murwillumbah railway line in North Lismore. These bridges include the structures at Alexandra Parade, Crane Street, Terania Street and Union Street. All these bridges are listed on the State Heritage Register (SHR).

In 2024, Transport carried out restoration work at Alexandra Parade, safety work at Winterton Parade and removed the Terania Street bridge to ensure public safety.

As part of the approval for this project, the Heritage Council of NSW (Heritage Council) requested that Transport consider the heritage significance of the remaining bridges in the area.

Sites

Alexandra Parade – PROJECT IN PROGRESS

The Alexandra Parade railway bridge spans over Alexandra Parade near Flick Street in North Lismore, adjacent to the Lismore Showground. Following the bridge strike on Alexandra Parade in February 2024, Transport installed new safety barriers on Alexandra Parade.  In December 2024, changes were made to the traffic flow at Alexandra Parade to further improve public safety.

Crane Street – PROJECT IN PROGRESS

The Crane Street railway bridge crosses Crane Street between Barrow Lane and Simmons Street in North Lismore.

Union Street – PROJECT IN PROGRESS

The Union Street railway bridge spans Union Street in South Lismore, crossing a flood-prone corridor near Leycester Creek. The bridge remains under review as part of broader heritage considerations.

Winterton Parade – PROJECT IN PROGRESS

The Winterton Parade railway bridge crosses a single lane of traffic near the Lismore Turf Club in North Lismore. Following the installation of new guardrails in early 2024, no further works are currently planned for the Winterton Parade bridge, However, the bridge remains under review as part of broader safety and heritage considerations.

Terania Street – PROJECT COMPLETED

The Terania Street railway bridge was located on Terania Street in North Lismore, crossing a key access road to the Lismore CBD.  The Terania Street bridge was removed in late 2024, and Transport for NSW has completed all demolition works and reopened the road to traffic, with no further action planned.

Next steps

Transport for NSW is progressing the heritage assessment on the four bridges. The heritage assessment will help inform future decisions about safety and traffic improvements in the area. Key considerations include:

  • evaluating heritage significance of remaining bridges
  • exploring options at Alexandra Parade
  • continuing engagement with the community, Lismore City Council and the local Member of Parliament.

The community will be notified once we have an outcome from this assessment.

No changes to traffic conditions are currently planned. Any future works will be shared with the community as soon as we have more information.
