Pedestrian Bridge over Dobroyd Parade, Haberfield

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW is building a new pedestrian bridge over Dobroyd Parade, Haberfield.

Wattle Street, Haberfield

Project benefits

The pedestrian bridge will provide a safer crossing at the busy intersection, which is just a short distance from Dobroyd Point Public School, and forms connections between Haberfield and Livvi's Place, Timbrell Park and Reg Coady Reserve.

The bridge is designed with stair and lift access on both sides, and is suitable for pedestrians, people with mobility issues, prams and bikes.

Key features of the proposal include:

  • new pedestrian bridge including a covered walkway for weather protection, built over Dobroyd Parade at the Waratah Street intersection
  • two new lifts and stairs on either side of the pedestrian bridge, a ramp to the lower lift landing on the northern side
  • removal of existing at-grade (street-level) road crossing on Dobroyd Parade and extension of the existing fence in the median
  • widening the footpaths on approach to the Waratah Street crossing and a new kerb ramp to provide a smoother transition between the footpath and the road for bike users
  • installing a concrete barrier along Dobroyd Parade in front of the pedestrian bridge
  • relocation of utilities, new landscaping, signage and linemarking
  • bicycle wheeling ramps on stairs.

Project status

The community was invited to provide feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) between Monday 27 November and Monday 11 December 2023.

Transport for NSW received 68 submissions, of which 64 were from the general community and four from community groups.

Transport for NSW has considered feedback and a Submissions Report has been published responding to comments received in the submissions. This report, along with the REF, has been used by Transport for NSW to assess key aspects of the proposed project features. You can read the Submissions Report here under ‘Reports’.

The project has now been determined to proceed. Major construction is expected to start between late 2024 and mid-2025 and will take around six months.

Next steps

Geotechnical investigations, utilities investigations and other site investigations will begin in the coming weeks to further understand the ground conditions and location of underground utilities to support the detailed design. The community will be notified of these investigations in advance along with any potential impacts associated with the work.

Transport for NSW will work with directly-impacted residents  on colours, privacy screening and landscaping. We understand that amenity and privacy are important to the community, and we will work with these residents to produce a detailed design that is sympathetic to the character of the local area.

Transport for NSW is committed to Country-centred design and will continue to consult with Aboriginal people and Aboriginal knowledge holders to ensure the proposed bridge and its designs are consistent with the principle of Designing with Country.

Community information

Previous community consultation

A proposal for a pedestrian bridge at the intersection was originally displayed for public consultation in 2020. (Three other proposed projects displayed at the time are no longer being considered).

At the time, there was strong community support for the proposal and Transport has prioritised its delivery, with some changes to the original concept design. The long ramps have been removed from the design, the location of the stairs has changed and the bridge is no longer being designed to cross Iron Cove Creek into Livvi’s Place and Timbrell Park.

Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of the pedestrian bridge?
The pedestrian bridge will provide a safer crossing at the busy intersection, which is just a short distance from Dobroyd Point Public School, and offer safer connections between Haberfield and Livvi's Place, Timbrell Park and Reg Coady Reserve.

What are the main features?
The bridge is designed with stair and lift access on both sides, suitable for pedestrians, and people with mobility issues, prams and bikes.

Why is Transport building the pedestrian bridge?
Transport studies have identified safety risks at the intersection and recommended the pedestrian bridge as an urgent priority.

How long will the project take?
Major construction is expected to start between late 2024 and mid-2025 and will take around six months.

Has the community been consulted previously?
An early-concept design for a pedestrian bridge over Dobroyd Parade was publicly displayed in early-2020, as part of the Haberfield, Ashfield and Leichhardt network improvements plan (known as the HAL projects*).

The three other projects are no longer being considered.

Has the design changed since the first consultation?
The design has been updated to minimise the footprint of the bridge and to reduce tree and vegetation impacts at Livvi’s Place and Timbrell Park.

The long ramps have been removed from the design due to their length (around 100 metres on each side), visual and amenity.

Have councils been involved in the process?
Inner West and City of Canada Bay councils have been consulted in the development of the proposal.

Both councils support the need for a pedestrian bridge to address safety risks.
