Thirroul Platform Extension Project

Reviewed

Project overview

The program is designed to simplify and modernise the rail network. Passengers will be able to access more services on a simpler and more reliable network through the delivery of better infrastructure, new trains and extra services.

Project scope

  • extending the southern end of Platforms 1, 2 and 3 by about eight metres. This will allow the longer fleet of intercity trains to stop at Thirroul and give customers access to all carriages
  • relocating the platform fences, stairs and gates to the end of the longer platforms
  • upgrading lighting, CCTV, PA systems, tactile paving and line markings to improve safety
  • realigning and installing new track, overhead wiring and signalling equipment for the new trains
  • raising the boundary fence at the southern end of Platform 1.
  • building train turnback infrastructure, so trains can turn around and travel in the opposite direction
  • installing a new drivers’ walkway and handrails.

Customer benefits

  • more services on the South Coast Line. This means a service every 15 minutes in the peak and every 30 minutes in the off peak between Wollongong and the Sydney CBD
  • as part of future stages of the program, South Coast customers will benefit from an extra 13,000 seats across the busiest times of the week.
