Sydney Trains Apprentices

Information on Apprenticeships and the recruitment process

Join the team that keeps Sydney moving!

If you’re looking for a rewarding career in a boom industry, there’s never been a better time to join the rail industry. Sydney Trains is the biggest passenger rail operator and maintainer in Australia and is the training ground for the NSW rail industry.

Sydney Trains offers a range of apprenticeships in the electrical, telecommunications and mechanical engineering trades.

As a Sydney Trains apprentice, you’ll have access to a wealth of experience, a workforce that takes pride in its work, and a culture of collaboration and innovation.

You’ll gain nationally recognised trade qualifications with opportunities to further develop your career post trade.

Our apprentices enjoy the benefits of flexible rosters that promote work/life balance, safe work environments, specialist industry training, and generous salaries.

A Sydney Trains apprenticeship is your opportunity to gain the skills and experience that will set you up for life.

When are apprenticeships advertised?

We advertise apprenticeship positions in August on https://iworkfor.nsw.gov.au and our apprentices commence in January of the following year.

Our current apprenticeship advertisement is now open until Tuesday 31 August 2021.

Recruitment process

Our process is merit based, taking into account the requirements of the job and the abilities and personal qualities of each applicant. It involves information sessions, job-related aptitude testing, assessment centre exercises, interviews and pre-employment checks.

Try-a-Trade Days

If you are thinking about an apprenticeship but have never used a power tool, attending a Try-a-Trade Day will build your skills and confidence. You’ll receive hands-on tools training by qualified tradespeople while learning more about the apprenticeship opportunities available at Sydney Trains.

Try-a-Trade Days are offered at various locations around Sydney in the period leading up to the Apprentice Recruitment campaigns. Unfortunately due to the current lockdown situation we cannot offer Try-a-Trade days in 2021.

Try-a-Trade is a joint initiative between Sydney Trains, the Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC), and Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT).

Electrical Pre-apprenticeship Program for Women

Sydney Trains has a genuine commitment to workforce diversity and has introduced some targeted recruitment programs to attract more women to apply for its apprenticeships.

The Electrical Pre-apprenticeship Program for Women is a 3-week program in collaboration with an external training organisation that offers participants three national units of competency from the Certificate II in Electrotechnology. This program has proven to be very effective in assisting women interested in gaining an electrical apprenticeship.

Please note that unfortunately due to the current lockdown in NSW we are not able to offer the program in 2021.

Work Experience Program

Our Work Experience Program (PDF, 83.84 KB) offers opportunities for students to experience the world of work at Sydney Trains and gain a better understanding of the career options available in the rail industry.

You can spend a week with us and learn about:

  • Diesel/Plant mechanics with our Heavy Plant team, which repairs and maintains a large fleet of track maintenance machines
  • Our Business Studies program which will provide opportunities to gain experience at our training facility at Petersham in a range of office procedures and tasks

Please note that the work experience program is subject to change due to COVID-19 requirements.

Unfortunately due to the current lockdown situation all work experience is on hold for the rest of the year.
