What is the NSW Centre for Road Safety?
The NSW Centre for Road Safety is the peak body responsible for road safety in NSW.
The primary objective of the centre is to deliver Road Safety for NSW. This involves direct delivery of road safety programs, delivery in partnership with Local Government, other agencies and parts of Transport for NSW (TfNSW), promoting road safety as a core value and key influence on decision-making across the organisation, other key agencies, stakeholders and the public.
The NSW Centre for Road Safety is based on the Safe Systems approach to road safety which has been adopted by developed nations successfully addressing road trauma.
The Safe Systems approach acknowledges that there is a limit to the amount of force a human can tolerate and that humans make mistakes, therefore roads, vehicles and speeds should be designed to both reduce the risk of crashes and protect people in the event of a crash by avoiding the body being exposed to forces beyond the limit of human tolerance.
TfNSW and local government can reduce crashes and casualties on our roads by adopting the Safe Systems approach with the vision of achieving:
- safe roads
- safe speeds
- safe vehicles
- safe people.
This is a shared responsibility for TfNSW and local government in delivering a safe road environment for road users through continued improvements in design, construction and development of the road network, and the traffic that is carries.
