Jan 2023 - Consultation closed

Consultation has now closed for the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and Vision Survey for the Coal Loader Wharf. The consultation period was open from Friday 2 December to Sunday 15 January 2023.

Thank you to everyone who provided a REF submission and/or completed the Vision Survey during the public display period.

We will carefully consider all feedback received from the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and publish a submissions report in the coming months. Feedback received will form part of the application to Heritage NSW, outlining our plan for the retrieval of heritage material and address any safety concerns.

Subject to planning and heritage approvals, our proposed work will take place in 2023. The work is expected to take around six months to complete, pending suitable weather and maritime conditions.

Feedback received via the Vision Survey will help us develop long-term plans for the site and we’ll be inviting you to have your say on concepts for any future plans later this year.

If you have any questions or comments, or would like to be added to our email distribution list to receive project updates, please email northplace@transport.nsw.gov.au

Project information

History of the Coal Loader Wharf

The heritage-listed Coal Loader Wharf is located on the Waverton Peninsula. Transport acknowledges the lands of the Cammeraygal people and that modern New South Wales is an overlay on Aboriginal land and that many of the routes we use today follow songlines Aboriginal people have followed for tens of thousands of years.

There’s a culturally important spring and wallabies and penguins lived on the peninsula within living history. Whales would give birth in the deep waters off the headland.

We understand the natural rock setting provided shelter and was a place to carry out cultural practices.
