Epping Bridge Project

Reviewed

Project overview

The Australian and NSW governments are investing $220 million in funding to replace Epping Bridge with a new, wider bridge to ease congestion, reduce travel times and improve road safety.

To enable main work construction early work will be carried out between May 2025 and mid 2026. This is in addition to early work completed at High Street, Epping in December 2024. Main work construction is expected to commence in 2026.

Check out our portal to find out more about the Epping Bridge Project, how Transport proposes replacing the existing bridge with a new, wider, safer and more efficient bridge and how the new bridge will benefit the community.

Latest news

August 2025 – No impacts to the Langston Place Opal bike shed, ‘Kiss and Ride’ and taxi stand during August 2025 early work activities

In July, we advised the community that during our August 2025 early work activities we would need to access the rail corridor via Langston Place. We advised that this work could temporarily impact the Langston Place Opal bike shed, ‘Kiss and Ride’ and taxi stand parking spaces adjacent to Epping Station.

While we still plan to undertake work near Langston Place this work will no longer impact the Opal bike shed, ‘Kiss and Ride’ or taxi stand parking spaces

An updated work area map for our August 2025 early work activities is as below.

There will still be temporary parking and traffic impacts to High Street as advised in the July notification.

For further information on August 2025 work activities and work schedule please view the July 2025 community notification (PDF, 395.56 KB)

June 2025 - Close of community consultation on the Review of Environmental Factors

Transport for NSW would like to thank everyone who took the time to review the Review of Environmental Factors and provide feedback and suggestions.
During the 13 September – 7 October 2024 consultation period we received 999 submissions from community members and stakeholders, including City of Parramatta Council, active transport groups and local community organisations.

Key issues raised in submissions included:

  • project cost safety
  • environmental and amenity impacts
  • active transport consideration
  • traffic management
  • design
  • community impacts.

Community feedback has been summarised and responded to in the REF Determination Report which is now available for the public to view. To supplement the Determination Report, a community focused summary (PDF, 1.21 MB) has also been prepared. This summary highlights how we engaged with the community, what we heard and how we responded.

During the consultation period we also received community feedback on the proposal’s modelled traffic benefits and particularly in relation to:

  • PM peak period traffic benefits
  • future traffic modelling for intersections outside of the project area
  • impacts of anticipated traffic growth in future years and the effect upon the efficiency and safety of the network.

In response to this feedback a review of the traffic modelling was subsequently carried out, which resulted in refinements to the traffic data and the provision of a more accurate indication of the impacts of the proposal. Further information on this review and refinements to the modelled traffic data can be found in the updated Transport Impact Assessment (May 2025) (PDF, 4.96 MB) and Determination Report (PDF, 3.01 MB).

To close out community engagement on the public display of the REF and concept design a Close of community consultation Review of Environmental Factors community notification (PDF, 323.07 KB) has been distributed to residents, businesses and key stakeholders in Epping, as well as to the wider community in the surrounding suburbs of North Epping, Beecroft, Cheltenham, Carlingford and Marsfield.

The proposal has now received formal approval and Transport will  proceed to engage a contractor to undertake detailed design and delivery of the project.

Project information

Background

Epping Bridge is congested in peak periods, with high levels of traffic delay and queuing down Epping Road. Traffic demand across the bridge will continue to grow as Epping and its town centre continues to develop. Replacing the existing five lane bridge with a new seven lane bridge will unlock vital road capacity for the 63,000 vehicles that cross the bridge each day.

In July 2018, the NSW Government announced the widening of Epping Bridge as the third in a series of road projects in Epping Town Centre to support Epping growth and town centre development.

In May 2022, a joint announcement was made by the Australian and NSW governments committing $220 million in funding for the Epping Bridge Project.

The Epping Bridge Project

  • enhances connectivity to Epping Town Centre, Epping Station and bus interchange for all modes of transport
  • supports Epping Town Centre development by increasing road capacity to support future growth and renewal
  • builds on major public transport investment in Epping Town Centre with the upgrade of Epping Station in 2013 and opening of Metro North West Line in 2019
  • complements Epping Town Centre road and intersection upgrades completed by Transport for NSW in 2018 as part of the Epping Town Centre Urban Activation Plan
  • aligns with future road and rail plans.

In April 2023, Transport for NSW awarded Mott MacDonald Australia the contract to develop the concept design, prepare the Review of Environmental Factors (REF), manage early investigation work, and provide technical advice for the project.

Between 13 September and 7 October 2024, the community was invited to provide feedback on the project's concept design (PDF, 159.38 KB) and the Review of Environmental Factors (PDF, 8.11 MB).

Transport carefully considered all feedback received and responded to all submissions in the REF Determination Report (PDF, 3.01 MB) which was published on the project webpage in June 2025.

Further to community feedback on the proposal’s modelled traffic benefits an updated Transport Impact Assessment (PDF, 4.96 MB) has also been prepared.

Based on the assessments in the REF, consideration of submissions received, and the updated Transport Impact Assessment undertaken, after the public display of the REF, Transport has decided to proceed with the project subject to the updated Environmental Mitigation Measures and Conditions of Approval.

Further refinements to the Proposal design, as outlined in the Determination Report will be investigated during detailed design.

Main work construction is expected to commence in 2026.  Transport for NSW will look for opportunities to reduce the construction duration during detailed design and with the delivery partner.

To enable commencement of main works, additional early works will be carried out within the road and rail corridor between May 2025 and mid 2026. This is in addition to early works completed on High Street, Epping in December 2024.

Key benefits

Key benefits of the Epping Bridge Project include:

  • increased road capacity, improved traffic flow and travel times
  • improved road safety
  • improved connectivity to Epping Town Centre, Epping Station and bus interchange for all modes of transport
  • enhanced pedestrian and cyclist safety and mobility
  • reduced bridge maintenance and operational costs.

Key features

The project proposes replacing the existing five lane bridge with a new, wider, safer and more efficient seven lane bridge.

The new bridge will include:

  • an additional westbound lane into Beecroft Road
  • an additional right turn lane southbound into Blaxland Road
  • a shared walking and bike riding path on the southern side of the bridge
  • a raised central median
  • bridge safety screens.

Additional road upgrades include:

  • road improvements to Beecroft Road, Blaxland Road, Epping Road, Bridge Street, High Street and Langston Place approaches to the bridge
  • upgrade of the traffic signals at the Epping Road, Blaxland Road and Langston Place intersection
  • a staged pedestrian crossing across Epping Road
  • raised pedestrian (zebra) crossings at High Street and Bridge Street.

Next steps

The proposal has now received formal approval and Transport will proceed to engage a contractor to undertake detailed design and delivery of the project.
