Project background
The six-kilometre section of the Princes Highway between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road has been prioritised as the first stage of the 20-kilometre Princes Highway upgrade between Jervis Bay Road and Sussex Inlet Road.
The Australian and NSW governments have committed $500 million for the continued planning and delivery of this project.
The Princes Highway upgrade between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road includes upgrading the existing highway to two lanes in each direction, separated by a median barrier to improve safety. The upgrade connects to the Jervis Bay Road intersection upgrade which is due for completion in 2027.
An upgrade of the Princes Highway between Jervis Bay Road and Hawken Road would deliver a more resilient transport network, improve safety and improve efficiency while providing connectivity to local services and nearby towns and villages.

Next steps
Discussions with potentially impacted property owners will continue, and we will also continue to work through how the highway upgrade impacts local access for all road users.
We are in the process of developing the concept design and environmental assessment of the highway upgrade. The concept design and REF is expected to be publicly displayed for feedback in late 2025 or early 2026. The upgrade has been funded for construction, however a start date for construction is yet to be determined.
