Project information

Background

Motorists travelling westbound on the M5 Motorway through Moorebank currently experience traffic congestion in the afternoon peak. This is caused by traffic entering the motorway westbound at Moorebank Avenue, and merging with traffic already on the motorway that is looking to exit at Hume Highway. Increasing heavy vehicles travelling from the Moorebank Intermodal Park will also add to the congestion.

Benefits

  • Provide a reliable road network to support economic and residential growth in western Sydney
  • Reduce congestion by removing the traffic weave
  • Improve safety and access to the Liverpool CBD
  • Provide pedestrian and cyclist connection across the Georges River.
  • Provide efficient, reliable travel between the Moorebank Intermodal Park and the state road network
  • Support the M5 Motorway as the key gateway for south‑west Sydney
  • Improve traffic flow across Georges River.

Project design

The upgrade of the M5 Motorway westbound between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway has been awarded as a design and construction contract with Seymour Whyte.

The M5 Westbound Upgrade includes:

  • a new 3 lane bridge over the Georges River and the Southern Sydney Freight Line, T2 and T5 railway lines, improving the connections between the M5 Motorway, Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway
  • removal of the weave on the M5 Motorway between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway to improve safety and traffic flow for road users entering and exiting the M5 Motorway
  • provision of extra lanes that will remove the need for around 2600 vehicles per day to weave between lanes and other road users when navigating the entry and exit points at the Hume Highway and Moorebank Avenue
  • enhancing the existing freight access to and from the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal
  • provision of a new pathway between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway for cyclists and pedestrians.
