Zero Emission Buses - Sydney bus depot conversions

Reviewed

Project overview

As part of the first stage of the Zero Emission Buses Program we are working in partnership with bus operators to convert 11 diesel and natural gas bus depots in Greater Sydney to zero emissions technology. Converting our bus depots is an important step to enable the introduction of new Zero Emission Buses into our public transport fleet.

Key benefits

Key benefits of the program include:

  • Quieter streets and local areas
  • Cleaner air with no bus exhaust fumes
  • A smoother ride and more comfort for passengers.

The first stage of the program commenced in 2023 and is expected to be complete by 2028. As part of the first stage, 11 existing bus depots will be converted to battery electric technology to support 1,200  new battery electric buses.  A new battery electric bus depot will also be built in Macquarie Park. Along with planned new electric buses and those already in service, there will be around 1,700 zero emission buses expected to be operating on Sydney roads by the end of 2028.
