Sep 2022 - Milton Ulladulla bypass Southern connection confirmed

Following significant consultation and investigation the southern connection for the Milton Ulladulla bypass has been confirmed.

The connection between the bypass and the existing highway will be a two-lane roundabout just north of Canberra Crescent at Burrill Lake. It will include a northbound bypass lane to provide uninterrupted access to the bypass for northbound traffic.

This will reduce the congestion currently experienced in the Milton and Ulladulla town centres and deliver a safer, more efficient and better-connected Princes Highway.

The draft design as shown below aims to minimise impacts to properties, the Burrill Lake township, and the environment. The bypass design will enable flexibility for any future upgrades to the Princes Highway south of Ulladulla.

Transport is continuing to work on the concept design and once complete, more information will be available on the Milton Ulladulla project page.

Sep 2022 - Results of the co-design process

The Burrill Lake Co-Design Committee Process Report is now available.

The Report outlines the assessment of the draft strategic options for the southern connection of the bypass, as well as any future upgrades through Burrill Lake.

Transport recognises the challenging decisions faced by the Committee. The Co-Design Committee has been an important part of  the community engagement. Transport acknowledges that the committee did not make a recommendation on their preferred option for the bypass southern connection or any upgrade of the Princes Highway at Burrill Lake.

Throughout the Co-Design process, Transport has listened to the Committee members, along with feedback from the wider community, key stakeholders and subject matter experts in making the decision on the intersection type and location.

No future major upgrades are planned between the south of Ulladulla and Burrill Lake in the short or medium term. There are no current or future plans to upgrade the Princes Highway to four lanes at Burrill Lake. In the short term, important safety upgrades will be carried out south of Ulladulla to ensure safer and more efficient journeys for motorists and may include additional overtaking lanes, intersection upgrades, shoulder widening, and rest area upgrades.

Project information

Background

The Princes Highway is a critical link between Sydney and the Illawarra Region with the NSW South Coast down to the Victorian border. It provides vital connections between towns and regional centres and is an important freight link. The Princes Highway connects key east-west road corridors and is a significant route for inter-regional business, tourism and leisure travel.

Transport is planning for important safety upgrades to ensure safer and more efficient journeys for motorists including additional overtaking lanes, intersection upgrades, shoulder widening, and rest area upgrades along the existing highway.

Next steps

In the short term, Transport is planning for important safety upgrades to be carried out south of Ulladulla to ensure safer and more efficient journeys for motorists including additional overtaking lanes, intersection upgrades, shoulder widening, and rest area upgrades. More information about these upgrades will be provided in the coming months.

Burrill Lake Co-Design Committee (BLCC)

The Burrill Lake Co-Design Committee (BLCC) was formed by Transport for NSW in June 2021, to give the community an important voice within the process of identifying and recommending options for the highway upgrade at Burrill Lake, and to investigate options for the southern connection of the Milton Ulladulla bypass. The Committee included community representatives, residents, stakeholder group representatives, business owners and other key stakeholders.

While the Committee was not a decision-making or regulatory body, the feedback and recommendations of the Co-Design Committee were incorporated into the future planning for the Princes Highway at Burrill Lake and the southern connection of the Milton Ulladulla bypass.

The Co-Design process concluded in November 2021, and Transport acknowledges the complex and challenging decisions associated with being part of the Co-Design
Committee and thanks all members for their time and participation.

Following discussions with members of the Burrill Lake Co-Design committee, the process and outcomes report (PDF, 12.4Mb) has been finalised.
