Sydney Trains: Using data to achieve Net Zero Emissions

Sydney Trains achieved its renewable energy Net Zero target in 2021 - four years ahead of schedule

They set an ambitious target to achieve Net Zero Emissions from electricity consumption by 2025. Another key goal was to reduce energy consumption by 10 per cent over five years.

Using energy and emissions data, the team developed an Energy Data Management System to identify its biggest emissions producing areas. This data pinpointed Sydney Trains operations as a key emissions producer. As a result, Sydney Trains adopted a renewable energy model, and achieved its Net Zero target in 2021, four years ahead of schedule.

Additional efforts are being made to reduce the rate of energy use by rail fleet movements, which makes up a large amount of energy use daily.
