Dec 2022 - Detailed design complete
The NSW Government is upgrading Greenwich Point Wharf as part of the Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure across the state.
Transport for NSW has completed the detailed design phase of the project. Following community feedback received during public display of the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) between 8 December 2021 and 19 January 2022, several changes have been made to the design, while maintaining accessibility requirements. These changes include:
- reducing the length of the jetty
- maximising weather protection using glass screens where practical
- using Lane Cove Council’s ‘gum leaf’ theme for the lift facade
- installing recreational berth access for smaller watercraft.
We will continue to investigate alternative transport arrangements while the wharf is closed for construction.
Work is expected to start in late-2023. We will keep the community updated on progress.
Project information
Background
Transport for NSW is upgrading Greenwich Wharf as part of the Transport Access Program (TAP). The upgraded wharf will provide access for customers with mobility needs, meeting the standards of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (DSAPT).
The new Greenwich Point Wharf
Customers with mobility needs are currently unable to access Lower Serpentine Road from Greenwich Point Wharf. The existing wharf at Greenwich Point includes a set of tidal steps for ferries to berth, a concrete jetty connecting the wharf to land and a small waiting shelter for passengers at the end of the wharf.
The proposed wharf design includes a new floating pontoon. A new pontoon would improve the efficiency and safety for ferries to pick-up and drop-off passengers. It would also provide an area for recreational boats to berth.
Upgrades would include:
- a waiting area with a curved roof, seating and glass weather protection panels for passenger comfort
- an uncovered gangway and jetty
- a new lift and stairs
- new bicycle parking hoops
The new wharf would provide Greenwich Point with facilities that all members of the community can access.
Next steps
Following community feedback received during the public display of the REF, Transport will investigate the following during detailed design:
- opportunities to reduce the lift height
- opportunities to reduce the length of the jetty
- additional weather protection
- different lift façades
- installation of berthing infrastructure such as appropriately spaced fenders, ladders and cleats on the pontoon to support berthing by vessels of different sizes
- extending bus operating hours.
Detailed design will continue throughout 2022 with construction expected to start in mid 2023.
We will continue to keep customers and the community updated as the project progresses.
Potential construction impacts
Construction of the proposal would take up to six months to complete, weather and maritime conditions permitting.
It is expected that:
- the wharf would temporarily close during construction
- temporary changes to pedestrian movements would be put in place during construction
- a small temporary construction compound would be established in Greenwich Park and Mary Carlson Park
- some truck movements and temporary traffic changes would be required for land based work
- minor pruning of vegetation to accommodate the new skybridge and lift.
Every effort would be made to minimise impacts to surrounding residents.
We would notify the community before starting work.
Other wharf upgrades in the area
Wharf interchanges across Sydney are being upgraded to improve the transport experience for customers and the community. To find out more about wharf upgrades in your area visit the Wharf Upgrade Program page.
In designing the new wharves, a number of areas need to be considered such as accessibility, the environment, customer safety and amenity, future demand and ferry operations. These are outlined in the Design Considerations factsheet (PDF, 335Kb).
