April 2024 – Start of construction

The Greenwich Point Wharf Upgrade received planning approval in July 2022. Detailed design is now complete, and construction is planned to start Monday 22 April 2024. Work will take about eight months to complete, weather permitting. During this time, the existing ferry services will not be running and access to the surrounding work area will be closed to the public.

Project information

Background

Transport for NSW is upgrading Greenwich Point Wharf as part of the Safe Accessible Transport program. The upgraded wharf will provide access for passengers with mobility needs, meeting the standards of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (DSAPT).

Key features of the project

  • new concrete jetty and new covered pontoon
  • new uncovered gangway connecting to the jetty providing an accessible route from street-level to the ferry
  • covered waiting area, passenger seating and weather protection
  • new lift and skybridge, connecting to the wharf level
  • slight relocation of existing bus shelter on Lower Serpentine Road to accommodate the new skybridge entrance
  • three bicycle hoops
  • improved lighting and security.

Changes to the wharf design

As a result of the community feedback received during the public display of the Review of the Environmental Factors (REF), we have:

  • reduced the length of the jetty
  • maximised weather protection using glass screens where practical
  • included Lane Cove Council’s ‘gum leaf’ theme for the lift façade
  • included installing berthing access for smaller, recreational watercraft.

We would like to thank everyone who has taken time to provide feedback on this project.

See key features here.

Alternative transport during construction

  • Ferry passengers will need to use alternative transport during the wharf closure. For people travelling to and from the city, the existing 265 bus route which travels from Lane Cove to North Sydney via Greenwich, connecting with St Leonards and North Sydney train stations, will continue to be available for passengers.
  • We will be providing additional bus services for the 265 route between Greenwich Point Wharf and Crows Nest, via St Leonards, which will be operating weekdays and nights and over the weekends to offset the missing ferry services. This route will continue to connect with St Leonards train station.
  • The existing bus shelter may be temporary removed to allow work to be carried out safely, but the footpath and bus stop will remain in place adjacent to the wharf on Lower Serpentine Road
  • Captain Cook Cruises operates a commuter ferry service during peak travel times from Greenwich Wharf in Bay Street. Please visit their website for timetable information.

For more information of bus services, please visit Trip Planner or phone Transport Info on 131 500.

For more information, see the map.

Please see timetable with additional bus services here.

Construction impacts

Construction will take up to eight  months to complete, weather and maritime conditions permitting.

Temporary changes during construction include:

  • the wharf will be temporarily closed during construction
  • a small temporary construction site compound will be established in Greenwich Park
  • there are no road closures planned during construction however some truck movements and temporary traffic changes will be required for landside work. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to please follow instructions of any on-site traffic controllers while work is underway
  • minor pruning of vegetation to accommodate the new skybridge and lift.

Every effort would be made to minimise impacts to surrounding residents.

Other wharf upgrades in the area

Wharf interchanges across Sydney are being upgraded to improve the transport experience for customers and the community. To find out more about wharf upgrades in your area visit the Wharf Upgrade Program page.

In designing the new wharves, a number of areas need to be considered such as accessibility, the environment, customer safety and amenity, future demand and ferry operations. These are outlined in the Design Considerations factsheet.
