Lewisham Station Upgrade

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government is improving accessibility and safety at Lewisham Station.

The Safe Accessible Transport program aims to make public transport safe, inclusive and easy to use for all passengers, especially people with disability, older people, people with prams or luggage and others who may be experiencing mobility problems.

Key benefits

Lewisham Station Upgrade is expected to include accessibility improvements such as lifts, wayfinding signage improvements, a family accessible toilet, accessible parking spaces, new platform hearing loops and ground surface tactile indicators.

Safety improvements will include additional lighting and CCTV.

The project’s design will also incorporate placemaking enhancements including Connection to Country design elements.

The final scope is subject to further consultation and development of a concept design.

Project status

An indicative design has been prepared by looking at the site's unique opportunities and constraints.

We are now undertaking targeted engagement with key stakeholders to facilitate development of a concept design.

The wider community will be invited to have their say on the draft concept design later this year, ahead of the development of planning approval documentation.

Subject to planning approval, site establishment will start in mid-2025 and main construction is expected to start in late-2025 and take around 18 months to complete.

Engagement will be ongoing throughout project development and delivery.

What we have heard so far

Before preparing an indicative design for Lewisham Station, we engaged with various groups including people with a disability, and separately with women and girls from the local community through a Safer Cities Program workshop.

We also accessed existing customer feedback about Lewisham Station to help understand community sentiment.

These engagements and research provided insights into how the transport network is used and the opportunities we have to improve passengers’ experiences.

Feedback we have heard so far includes:

  • Flooding in the underpass needs to be improved.
  • Railway Terrace bus stop doesn't feel very safe.
  • More safety and security measures such as additional CCTV cameras, emergency help points and mirrors for better visibility could make the station underpass feel safer at night. Warmer lighting and public art could also make it less sterile, and also deter vandalism.
  • After dark, Thomas Street can feel like the most unsafe area around the station. Better amenities, as well as more lighting, and landscaping could improve this.

Have your say

We are currently undertaking targeted stakeholder engagement, and will be seeking feedback from the wider community, passengers and other stakeholders later this year. Contact us to subscribe to project updates.
