Site investigations
Investigations are planned to occur in the station underpass and along Victoria Street, on Monday 11 August between 8pm and 4am, to inform further project development. Work is planned to occur during the evening period to reduce the impact on the community and passengers, and is not expected to generate much noise.
One parking space near the station entry will be temporarily unavailable during this time to facilitate investigations. Activities are weather dependent.
See the August 2025 Community Notification (PDF, 441.39 KB) for more information.
Project status
Planning for the upgrade of Lewisham Station is underway.
Following the public display of the project’s Review of Environmental Factors (REF) from 25 March to 22 April 2025, the project has now received planning approval.
A Determination Report (PDF, 1.44 MB) which captures Transport’s responses to community and stakeholder feedback has been prepared. It is available by clicking the link above and in the Planning Documents section of this page.
Key feedback includes overall community support for the upgrade, increased landscaping and biodiversity, improved accessibility, safety and security, and traffic and transport concerns.
A contract for the design and construction of the station upgrade will be awarded later this year.
Site establishment and construction is expected to commence in early 2026, and take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete.
The community will be kept informed as the project progresses.

What we’ve heard so far
Review of Environmental Factors Feedback
In March-April 2025, Transport publicly displayed the REF for Lewisham Station Upgrade. We invited community and stakeholder feedback on plans to provide an accessible station with improved amenity and safety for customers.
Key feedback included:
- overall community support for the upgrade
- increased landscaping and biodiversity, including more green spaces, additional planting, and keeping existing vegetation
- improved accessibility and connectivity
- enhanced safety and security measures
- traffic and transport concerns during both construction and operation
- support for more active transport options
- improved visual amenity and appearance of the station
- management of noise and vibration
- addressing flooding issues in the station underpass.
Feedback received has been considered by the Project Team and responses to feedback are available in the Lewisham Station Upgrade Determination Report (PDF, 1.44 MB). Feedback that related to items outside the scope of the proposal has been provided to the appropriate agency for consideration.
Early engagement
During our early engagement period which ran from 30 July - 18 August, 63 pieces of feedback were received.
Common themes raised through feedback include:
- overall support for the project and improving accessibility at Lewisham Station
- support and commentary regarding resolving flooding issues in underpass
- requests to retain timed shopper/commercial parking
- support for additional bicycle parking and for it to be under cover and in visible locations
- support to improve overall safety at and around the station, such as pedestrian crossings, widening footpaths, CCTV and additional lighting
- suggestions to provide pedestrian connectivity between heavy rail and light rail station
- requests from Lewisham Better Streets for Victoria Street/Railway Terrace to be re-imagined to provide an alfresco community space (widened paths with seating areas and/or pedestrianise the top of Victoria St)
- suggestions to make changes to Victoria Street to provide a safe turning circle for cars to ease congestion.
Preliminary engagement
Prior to the early engagement period which occurred from 30 July to 18 August 2024, we engaged with various groups including Inner West Council, people with disability, and separately with women and girls from the local community through a Safer Cities Program workshop. We also accessed existing customer feedback about Lewisham Station to help understand community sentiment.
These engagements and research provided insights into how the transport network is used and the opportunities we have to improve passengers’ experiences.
A summary of some of the feedback we heard during this stage of engagement includes:
- flooding in the underpass needs to be addressed
- safety and security: additional safety measures such as CCTV, help points and mirrors, wayfinding signage and additional lighting will help the station feel safer. Railway Terrace bus stop and Thomas Street can feel unsafe at times
- accessibility: include a lift lobby with space for someone in a wheelchair to safely wait while passengers alight the lift, make sure street furniture (i.e. seats, bicycle hoops) don't block paths for people with vision impairment, and use larger lift buttons. Suggestions for a ramp as opposed to a lift.
Workshops with local people with disability
We want to hear from local people with disability and their carers. You will have the opportunity to make a real difference by contributing valuable insights based on your lived experience as a person with accessibility needs.
Workshops will occur online, on several occasions during the design process. Eligible participants will be provided a gift voucher at each stage in exchange for their involvement and feedback.
