September 2025 – School holidays closure and changed exemptions

Major restoration work has been impacted by ongoing wet weather from March to August this year. The expected completion of the works currently under construction has been delayed significantly and the weekly road closures has been extended to 18 December 2025.

Transport has reviewed the road closure exemptions and associated impacts on work progress. As a result of this review, it was determined that closures will be required during the upcoming NSW spring school holidays. The weekly closure will remain as Tuesdays to Thursdays between 7am and 4:30pm, there will be no closures on Mondays and Fridays during NSW school holidays.

We have also reviewed the special event exemption dates and will be cancelling the exempted dates of Friday 24 October and Tuesday 4 to Friday 7 November. 

There will be no closure on the following days due to special events in Local Government Area (LGA):

  • November:  Wednesday 12 to Friday 14
  • December: Thursday 4 to Friday 5

Road closures are necessary due to insufficient room for traffic to pass through when large machinery such as cranes and excavators are operating within the confined road space. The project team requires maximising full access to the road with extended road closures to sufficiently stabilise the affected slip sites before the yearend holiday period, and to minimise the risk of further damage and disruptions through the summer season.

June 2025 – Major restoration work and weekly road closure resumed

Work to repair slope and pavement damage on the Oxley Highway at Mount Seaview will be on going. Weekly road closures on the Oxley Highway will be in place until November 2025, closure times are:

  • Tuesday to Thursday, 7am to 4.30pm
  • Fridays, 7am to 3pm.

There will be no closure on weekends, Mondays, school holidays and public holidays.
New western closure point at Fenwicks Road, west of Knodingbul Road (around 18km east of Yarrowitch).
Transport for NSW is working closely with Councils to minimise traffic impact as much as possible. We will provide a list of special event dates to be exempted from closure, in due course.

June 2025 – Landslide clean up continues, the Oxley Highway will reopen on Friday 13 June from 4:30pm

Transport for NSW continues clean up effort at more than 100 new landslips on the Oxley Highway at Mount Seaview, caused by extreme weather in May 2025.

The section between Forbes River Road and Clay Road (west of Gingers Creek) will reopen on Friday 13 June from 4:30pm.

Road will remain open over the weekend (14 and 15 June) and on Monday (16 June).

On-going restoration work and weekly planned closures will resume on Tuesday 17 June from 7am, extended until November 2025.

June 2025 – Landslide clean up continues on the Oxley Highway

More than 100 new landslips have been detected around Mount Seaview since heavy rainfall over the past two weeks. Transport for NSW continues clean up effort to remove substantial amount of mud and collapsed trees from the road. The section between Forbes River Road and Clay Road (west of Gingers Creek) remained closed.

We are aiming to reopen the road on Friday 13 June and thank the community for their patience during this important work.

May 2025 - Oxley Highway closed due to landslides

On-going restoration work and weekly planned closure will resume on Tuesday 17 June from 7am.

A few landslides occurred on the Oxley Highway due to on-going wet weather conditions. The Oxley Highway at Mount Seaview is closed. Transport for NSW is attending to the landslides to assess the severity.

March 2025 - Weekly road closures resume on the Oxley Highway for major restoration work

Project information

Background

Heavy rainfall in March 2021 caused significant damage to the Oxley Highway, with around 70 landslips occurring, 10 of which are major. Transport for NSW (Transport) in partnership with specialist contractors carried out immediate repair and restoration work to restore access on this essential roadway.

The section of the highway between Yarras and Mount Seaview was reopened in May 2021 and the section between Mount Seaview and Gingers Creek Roadhouse in July 2021, with a few sections remaining under single lane, alternating flow arrangement.

Transport is continuing restoration and improvement work to reinstate the road to pre-2021 flood condition. Work will take about two years to complete.

During this time there will be periods where we need to fully close the road to carry out repair and restoration work safely or for further emergency work. We will endeavour to provide as much notice as possible to the community.
