Wollongong Stabling Yard and Platform Extension Project

Reviewed

Project overview

The program is designed to simplify and modernise the rail network. Passengers will be able to access more services on a simpler and more reliable network through the delivery of better infrastructure, new trains and extra services.

We also upgraded the stabling yard to hold extra trains, and carried out track work in the rail corridor to improve passenger and freight services.

Project scope

  • extending both platforms by about 9 metres at the southern end to hold the longer intercity trains. This will give customers access to all carriages
  • reconfiguring the tracks between the station and stabling yard to support extra services and longer trains
  • realigning and installing new overhead wiring and signalling equipment for the trains
  • building new walkways in the rail corridor for drivers, cleaners and maintenance crews
  • upgrading lighting, CCTV, PA systems, tactile paving and line markings to improve safety
  • building train turnback infrastructure, so trains can turn around and travel in the opposite direction
  • installing a new drivers’ walkway and hand rails.
  • upgrading safety facilities, including CCTV and PA systems.

Customer benefits

  • more services on the South Coast Line. This means a service every 15 minutes in the peak and every 30 minutes in the off peak between Wollongong and the Sydney CBD
  • as part of future stages of the program, South Coast customers will benefit from an extra 13,000 seats across the busiest times of the week.

Project status

We completed this project in May 2022.

Additional overhead wiring upgrade work was completed at Wollongong between May 2022 and July 2023.
