Project information

Jenolan Caves Road updated closures map December 2024

Hampton

The works at the Hampton slope were extensive and complex. Workers were required to abseil down the slope in order to complete the work, which involved replacing several culverts as well as the installation of more than 200 soil nails and shotcrete at two separate locations. Work at the Hampton slope was completed in July 2024, two months ahead of schedule.

Critical remediation work at Carlos Creek, near Hampton began in July 2024 following the completion of the Hampton downslope.

The works to repair Carlos Creek were complex due to the unstable ground under the road. To improve the ground stability the project included installing 30 grout injection columns and 220 soil nails.

Crews used four light-weight drill rigs, known as Marinis, during the work. The machines were lowered over the side of the slope which drastically reduced the number of road closures required to complete the work.

The work at Carlos Creek was completed in December 2024, three months ahead of schedule.

Jenolan Caves Road at Hampton is now open to two-way traffic for the first time in almost 4 years.

A final layer of asphalt through both project sites will be laid in early 2025.

Two Mile

Remediation work at Two Mile on Jenolan Caves Road commenced in August 2024.

Work will require the installation of up to four rows of soil nails, up to eight metres each in length, with more than 1200 nails expected to be installed at nine failure sites along the Two Mile. As well as using soil nails to repair the slope failures, we are improving drainage infrastructure to better handle surface run-off during rainfall.

This extensive remediation work will take about 18 months to complete and will restore access to the Jenolan Caves precinct to its previous condition.

Five Mile

A contractor was appointed to undertake a works delivery package for repairs to the Five Mile in September 2023, however, a further extreme rain event in April 2024 caused significantly more damage and the road is continuing to deteriorate. Further development work has since ceased while the long-term viability of Five Mile is considered.
