Gerringong upgrade - Princes Highway upgrade

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW has upgraded the Princes Highway between Mount Pleasant and Toolijooa Road. This project was funded by the NSW Government.

Transport for NSW officially opened the Princes Highway upgrade at Gerringong on Thursday 20 August 2015.

The Premier for NSW, Minister for Roads, Freight and Maritime and the Kiama MP removed the traffic cones off the highway and let motorists drive through on all four divided lanes.

Afterwards, the community was able to catch up with the project team to celebrate the highway opening.

Many thanks to all of you for your continued patience over the years while the highway upgrade was being carried out.

Background

In March 2006 Roads and Maritime announced a proposal to upgrade the Princes Highway between Gerringong and Bomaderry to a four lane highway with median separation.

In November 2007 Roads and Maritime displayed the route options and in June 2009 announced a preferred option for the upgrade of the Princes Highway between Gerringong and Bomaderry. Roads and Maritime is now carrying out the planning and construction of these projects separately:

  • Gerringong upgrade – Mount Pleasant to Toolijooa Road (completed August 2015)
  • Foxground and Berry bypass – Toolijooa Road to just south of Andersons lane (under construction)
  • Berry to Bomaderry upgrade – Mullers Lane to Cambewarra Road (in planning).

The preferred concept design was described and environmental, social and functional constraints were outlined in the Gerringong to Bomaderry Princes Highway upgrade Preferred Option Report, October 2008. This report can be accessed from the Gerringong to Bomaderry document library page.

In response to safety concerns raised by the community in late 2011, the NSW Government committed to reviewing the Gerringong upgrade concept design. The review recommended locations where consolidating individual driveways into shared access roads could improve highway safety by reducing the number of entry points for traffic joining the highway.

In July 2013, NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell and Member for Kiama Gareth Ward announced the four shared access road will be constructed as part of the upgrade. To view these designs visit the project documents page.

Benefits

  • Improving road safety on the Princes Highway and local road network with shared access roads and property accesses
  • Improving safety by removing the rail level crossing at Fern Street
  • Providing access to Gerringong via the new Belinda Street interchange that is protected from local floods
  • Improving safety and traffic efficiency through the additional (third) climbing lane to Mount Pleasant
  • Providing safe crossing of the highway by cattle and farm machinery through underpasses
  • Supporting regional and local economic development
  • Generating local employment opportunities
  • Providing value for money.

Contract awarded

Transport for NSW contracted Fulton Hogan to design and construct the Gerringong upgrade.

The upgrade provides 7.5 kilometres of upgraded highway and includes two new interchanges with access to Gerringong and Gerroa.
