Project information

Background

Prospect Highway is a major roadway through western Sydney which connects motorists with the M4 Motorway, the Great Western Highway, Old Windsor Road and the M2 Motorway. Around 35,000 vehicles currently use the Prospect Highway each day, including 5000 heavy vehicles, this road has long been a critical corridor for both local and regional traffic.

Prior to the upgrade, the stretch of Prospect Highway between Reservoir Road, Prospect, St Martins Crescent, Blacktown was mainly a two-lane undivided road. This caused significant congestion and delays, especially during peak hours.

The upgrade has transformed it into a four-lane highway, with a median strip providing much-needed capacity and improving travel times for road users. A 3.7km shared path on the western side of Prospect Highway provides a safe, accessible walking and cycling path, that connects from the M4 Motorway to Blacktown Road.

Benefits

Benefits of the upgrade include:

  • improve safety and access for local and through traffic.
  • improve the efficiency and reliability of bus services with dedicated kerbside bus lanes.
  • improve safety and better connectivity for people who walk and ride
  • improve travel times and reduced congestion on Prospect Highway between Blacktown and the M4 Motorway
  • support freight movement.

Features

The key features of the Prospect Highway Upgrade include:

  • six lanes between St Martins Crescent and Blacktown Road
  • four-lane divided road from an undivided two-lane road
  • two new bridges over M4 Motorway and Great Western Highway
  • a new two- way link road between Great Western Highway and Prospect Highway, with traffic lights at each end of the new road
  • speed limit change on Prospect Highway between Reservoir Road and Blacktown Road, from 60km/h to 70km/h
  • installing a kerbside bus lane in each direction between Lancelot Street and north of St Martins Crescent.

  • upgrading 3.7 km shared path on the western side of Prospect Highway between M4 Motorway and Blacktown Road.

  • improved street lighting making the area safer at night for people walking and cycling in the area
  • new pedestrian underpass connecting Sher Place to Old Church Lane, from west to east and links directly to the shared path for pedestrians and cyclists along Prospect Highway

  • providing a new kiss-and-drop facility at Shelley Public School
  • upgrading the intersection at Hadrian Avenue and Kenworth Drive to provide a roundabout

Engagement

Shelley Public School Bush Tucker Garden.

As part of the Prospect Highway upgrade a new bush tucker garden was installed at Shelley Public School. The garden will be used by the school as an additional tool to teach students about the cultural knowledge of Aboriginal people and how to care for Country.

Aboriginal engagement

On Friday 25 February 2022, Transport for NSW and Fulton Hogan participated in a smoking ceremony to acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of the land, the Dharug Country. The Prospect Highway upgrade between Reservoir Road, Prospect and St Martins Crescent, Blacktown is situated on Dharug Country.

The smoking ceremony placed Aboriginal traditions and culture at the forefront of our work activities and was a meaningful way to recognise the history and culture of the land on which the project is located and a channel to reunite with our Indigenous stakeholders.

The ceremony allowed team members to be washed in the smoke to cleanse the mind, body and land. It also lets the ancestors and spirits know of a gathering on Country, it promotes visitors' protection and well-being to the land and creates a pathway to a brighter future.
